Visit in the Netherlands
The KOBAN project consortium meeting took place on 23-24 April 2025 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The event was hosted by the Dutch National Police (NPN). During the two-day stay, key information from project partners, law enforcement experts and community stakeholders was presented, allowing participants to engage in a dynamic exchange of ideas, field visits and strategic planning sessions.
On the first day, participants met at the Utrecht Police Headquarters, where work package leaders presented progress in their areas of activity. The highlight of the programme was an inspiring opening speech by Chief of Police Yvonne Hondema, emphasising the key role of Community Policing in shaping the future of police services across Europe.
The day continued with an attractive bike tour of local neighbourhoods, which allowed participants to see first-hand the activities of Community Policing officers. Participants visited youth centres, a gym running projects to support at-risk youth, and child-friendly places. The field trip demonstrated the network of cooperation between the police and residents. At the end of the tour, participants were able to see the Digital Police Station in the centre of Utrecht, supported by artificial intelligence. This is an excellent example of how innovation can, to a certain extent, improve the provision of assistance to residents in the area of ensuring a sense of security.
The second day began with a visit to the Zaans Police Station in Zaandijk, where officers shared their daily experiences and best practices in engaging local communities. The group then visited two COA (Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers) centres, witnessing the joint efforts of COA and police staff to create a safe and inclusive environment for refugees. At these locations, immigrants and refugees staying in the Netherlands receive assistance and the necessary support in adapting to their new living conditions. The participants had the opportunity to observe the cooperation between the Dutch police and asylum services.
Later in the day, the meeting continued at the Zaans Museum Café, with a picturesque view of historic Dutch windmills. There were presentations by the other work package leaders, followed by a summary discussion outlining the next steps of the project and common goals.
The consortium meeting ended on a positive note – full of inspiration, shared goals and strengthened partnerships aimed at building safer and more resilient communities through innovation and cooperation.
